I’ve read several thoughtful middle grade books about Black history this month. Sometimes middle grade books are just the right vehicle to teach history in a more accessible way.
Did you know that Richmond is home to a 16th century English Tudor mansion? @agecrofthallgardens is a great place to visit with your family, particularly in the spring. Read my new review today and learn why you have to visit this impressive historic home - link in bio! #thehistorymom #historytravel #agecrofthall
Great lunch at Historic Hanover Tavern today. Fun road trip to eat in the middle of history! #hanovertavern
I finished another one of my most anticipated historical fiction releases of 2021 yesterday and was blown away by the beautiful writing of the heartbreaking story. Send for Me by Lauren Fox is based on the author’s own ancestors’ flight from Germany during World War II. I love historical fiction books built around a true story, especially involving the author’s own family history. I think it adds emotional richness and depth to a story when there’s a personal connection.
Thinking of spring break plans? There’s a small town in Virginia that combines history with outdoor activities. Read my new review of Farmville and see why it should be on your list to visit on any trip through Virginia (link in bio)! #thehistorymom #historytravel #FindWhatYouLoveInFarmville #visitfarmvilleva
One of my very favorite historical fiction authors, Susan Meissner, writes compelling stories about resilient women who go through some of the most challenging events from history. I think I’ve read almost all of her books! Her latest book, The Nature of Fragile Things, is no exception and is another 5 star read for me! I had been looking forward to this book for over a year, from the first moment I learned it would be about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It follows a young Irish immigrant through the earthquake and its aftermath, with a suspenseful story of lies, betrayal, friendship, and motherly love wrapped around it. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t put it down. And the details from the earthquake and the fires that came afterwards were so descriptive, I could visualize the horrific scenes in my mind. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the earthquake or anyone who loves a thrilling story from history. #historymomreads #bookstagram #thenatureoffragilethings #susanmeissner
