I really enjoy stories about women hidden from history, and Denny S. Bryce’s upcoming novel, The Other Princess, brought to life a woman I had never heard of before. Born an African princess in the mid-19th century, Aina survives a horrific experience as a young child and is saved from enslavement by a British naval captain. Renamed Sarah Forbes Bonetta, she is brought to England as Queen Victoria’s African goddaughter where she interacts with the royal family but still questions her identity in British society. The quest to find her sense of purpose takes her back to the place of her greatest heartache, testing her strength but ultimately leading her home. Check another presidential site off your list when you’re visiting New York City. The @trbirthplacenps is a replica of the original childhood home of President Theodore Roosevelt and is a museum dedicated to telling his life story. You can even see the actual bed where Teddy was born and his childhood crib! The museum celebrates its 100th birthday next month and is a great historical addition to any trip to the Big Apple. Read my new review to learn how to make it part of your vacation. Link in bio and below. #thehistorymom #TheodoreRoosevelt #PresidentialHistory #TheodoreRooseveltBirthplace #NewYorkCity #ILoveNY Tomorrow my new review takes us to a presidential site in New York City, the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site. A few years ago, I wrote a mini-review of my favorite historical museum in the city, the New-York Historical Society. Located near the American Museum of Natural History on NYC’s Central Park West side, this museum is the place to learn about New York’s storied history. I was fascinated by the portrait of Theodosia Burr and the special presidential exhibit (including a replica Oval Office!) on my visit, and can’t wait to go back! Have you been to the historical society? #newyorkhistoricalsociety #NewYork I enjoy Penny Haw’s books about hidden women who made a big impact on history, and her debut last year, The Invincible Miss Cust, was one of my favorites. Her latest novel, The Woman at the Wheel, is about a woman lost to history who is finally getting her time in the spotlight - Bertha Benz. Do you like to read books before or after watching a TV series? I started the STARZ show, The Spanish Princess, last month after I watched the season finale of Outlander. All about Katherine of Aragon, King Henry VIII’s first wife, the show is so good! I saw it was based on this Philippa Gregory book and was excited to find it at my favorite used book store, @midlobooks. I’m starting it on today’s flight to parents weekend at my son’s college! What’s your favorite historical book to TV show adaptation? #historymomreads #bookstagram #philippagregory #theconstantprincess #thespanishprincess 425 years ago today, King Philip II of Spain died at El Escorial, which he built in the mid-16th century to honor the Spanish victory over the French at the Battle of St. Quentin. This massive complex of buildings housing the royal tombs, a jaw-dropping basilica to rival St. Peter’s, and two very different palaces is an easy day trip from Madrid. Read my new review to learn why El Escorial is the historic heart of Spain! Link in bio and below. #thehistorymom #elescorial #Spain #visitSpain How has it been 22 years? The years go by but may we never forget. Even though it’s still 90°+ outside, all I can think about is fall and the cozy things I want to do, including curling up with a good book by a fireplace! I love to rethink my reading in the fall, focusing on rich historical fiction and classics, especially in my annual “LM Montgomery October.” This fall, I am excited to tackle a sweeping historical tome by James A. Michener and to finally read Montgomery’s Pat and Jane books. One of my favorite towns in England is Oxford, the literary capital of Britain. There are so many bookish tours and historical sites you can visit in this one town, including sites related to CS Lewis, JRR Tolkien, Lewis Carroll, and more. Plus your kids will love walking into the Harry Potter movies, which were filmed in some of the colleges around town. It’s a fun place for everyone in the family! Read my new review about planning a trip to this college town - link in bio or below. #thehistorymom #Oxford #oxfordEngland #historytravel #familytravel
