In my Booking It Through History: First Ladies focus this month, I learned more about Thomas Jefferson’s wife and daughter, both named Martha. Since his wife died 18 years before he became president, his daughter served as his acting first lady on many occasions. Read my new post today to learn all about the Marthas who enabled Jefferson to focus on the founding documents and laws of the new United States. Their stories are full of love and loss, births and deaths, and an unwavering devotion to the man who served as our third president. Following in their footsteps will take you through Virginia, Washington City, Philadelphia, and even Paris! Link in bio and below. #thehistorymom #ThomasJefferson #MarthaJefferson #MarthaJeffersonRandolph #Monticello #PresidentialHistory #FirstLadyHistory #womenshistorymonth #historytravel #familytravel #BookingItThroughHistory I read several books in March to learn more about the First Ladies of our third president, Thomas Jefferson. His wife died 18 years before his presidency, leaving his daughter to fill in as acting First Lady on occasion. My #BookingItThroughHistory post tomorrow is all about these two women, both named Martha, who were so vitally important to President Jefferson. Another one of my most anticipated spring releases is “Coronation Year” by Jennifer Robson, and I was excited to get an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is the third Robson book I’ve read, and I couldn’t wait for the latest release by one of my favorite historical fiction authors! One of my most anticipated books of the spring is “The House is on Fire” by Rachel Beanland, and I was thrilled to get an electronic ARC from @SimonBooks. Not only is the author local to me, the book is also about an event that happened right here in Richmond, Virginia over 200 years ago. It’s Women’s History Month, and I want to highlight the two historical sites I’ve visited that are solely focused on our nation’s First Ladies (not their husbands!). April and May are huge months in publishing, and there are so many great books coming out! Check out my most anticipated spring books ranging from historical fiction to contemporary romance (link in bio and below). What’s your most anticipated book this season? #historymomreads #springreads #newbooks #histfic #bookstagram It’s Shakespeare Week in England, so it’s the perfect time to resurrect your favorite play or retelling from your college syllabus. My favorite Shakespeare play is “Romeo and Juliet,” and I am a sucker for all of the contemporary novels or movies using the tragic story as a base. “West Side Story” is my all-time favorite retelling, but I also reread the original Shakespeare text last year and cried for the star-crossed lovers once again. Happy spring! I recently read a delightful book that is a perfect read for this season full of family traditions and celebrations. “The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise” by Colleen Oakley is a fun, intergenerational caper about two very different people brought together by unfortunate circumstances. Tanner is a disillusioned Gen Z’er who had to give up her senior year of college due to a freak accident. She becomes the live-in caretaker of Louise, a feisty octogenarian who is hiding a decades old secret. When the lies from Louise’s past bubble up to the surface, they go on a cross-country road trip that unearths old mysteries, new loves, and a realization that age doesn’t define friendships. Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Ireland is one of my favorite places to read about, especially in historical fiction. I always recommend Edward Rutherfurd’s excellent series that spans the centuries of the Emerald Isle’s troubled history. I also love Amy Harmon’s “What the Wind Knows,” a sweeping romantic time travel novel about the Irish Civil War. It was one of my favorite books read in 2022! What’s your favorite book about Irish history?
