The @motonmuseum in Farmville, Virginia is known as the birthplace of the student civil rights movement. This Friday marks the 70th anniversary of the student walkout, led by 16-year-old Barbara Johns, which ultimately helped integrate schools in America. Read my new review of the museum and plan your visit (link in bio)! Be sure not to miss the 10-hour virtual event planned for the anniversary on Friday! #thehistorymom #historytravel #moton1951 #motonmuseum
Another fantastic novel by Karin Tanabe! She’s quickly become a go-to author for telling women’s stories in the midst of war and struggles. The Diplomat’s Daughter is an exquisite book about the intertwined fates of Emi Kato, the twenty-one year old daughter of a Japanese diplomat stationed in the United States during Pearl Harbor, and two of her friends, Christian Lange and Leo Hartmann. Emi’s family is sent to an internment camp in Texas where she forms a friendship with Christian whose German-born parents were arrested and sent to the camp as well. The book flashes back in time to Emi’s first love, Leo, a Jewish boy in 1930s Vienna, and his fate during the war. This novel is a sweeping story that takes you from Nazi Austria to Japan, China, America, and the battles in the Pacific. I love books with an epic story that teaches me about a new place or time period. I especially learned a great deal reading about Emi’s time in Japan during the war. It’s a must-read book for anyone who loves books about World War II history and for those who love uncovering little known slices of history. #historymomreads #bookstagram #karintanabe #thediplomatsdaughter
Who is your go-to historical fiction YA author? Mine is Ruta Sepetys. Two of my favorite books last year were written by her, The Fountains of Silence and Salt to the Sea. A couple of weeks ago, I read her first novel, Between Shades of Gray. It’s a hard story about a Lithuanian teenager caught up in a Soviet gulag during World War II, a part of history that I didn’t know much about. While a tough read, its overall message is one of hope and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. It’s been made into a movie called Ashes in the Snow so I’ll have to check that out! #historymomreads #bookstagram #rutasepetys #betweenshadesofgray #ashesinthesnow
Many times, colleges are historic sites themselves and display unique historic artifacts. When you visit Dublin, you must tour Trinity College, especially its Book of Kells exhibit. This museum displays the brilliantly decorated manuscript of the Gospels from the 9th century, which was saved from Viking raids and wars over the centuries. Also part of the exhibit is entrance to the college’s library, which will make you feel as if you’ve stepped into a Harry Potter movie! While we can’t visit Ireland right now, there is a great virtual tour! Read my new review today - link in bio! #thehistorymom #bookofkells #trinitycollegedublin #ireland #dublin
To close out #middlegrademarch, I read the Seeds of America trilogy by prolific middle grade author, Laurie Halse Anderson. These books had been on my TBR for a while so I was glad to have a reason to read them.
156 years ago last week, a Union breach in the lines near Petersburg sparked the final push by the US Army to end the Civil War. You can visit this battlefield today as part of @pamplinhistoricalpark and learn more about the breakthrough and how it led to the end of the war just one week later. The park also has many exhibits on how civilian life was affected by the war and what a soldier’s life was like during the war. Read my new review today, and put it on your list to visit (link in bio)! #thehistorymom #historytravel #civilwar #PamplinHistoricalPark
